Compressus Added to LEADERS Consortium
CHANTILLY, VA … March 14, 2002 — The LEADERS Consortium, a group of leading technology companies tasked with deploying the Lightweight Epidemiology Advanced Detection & Emergency Response System (LEADERS), today announced the addition of Compressus, a leading provider of data optimization technologies for video, voice, and imaging applications to the Consortium. The LEADERS Consortium will be utilizing Compressus' technology to more effectively share large quantities of information and data via the Internet.
LEADERS, the first program of its kind, provides military, government and civilian medical personnel, public health and homeland security officials with the enhanced ability to identify and mitigate the consequences of a biological warfare event, a significant disease outbreak, and a natural or man-made disaster.
"The ability to effectively track and thereby minimize biological and disease-related outbreaks is a critical charge of our state and national health and homeland security officials," said Tim Hannon, Vice President of EYT, a LEADERS Consortium Member. "With the addition of Compressus to the LEADERS Consortium, we can provide even faster access to the information these officials need most."
LEADERS is using Compressus' best-in-class data compression technology to enable maximum data efficiency. With Compressus technology in place, LEADERS will significantly reduce data storage requirements and accelerate the speed of transmission for large image datasets that are regularly associated with disease monitoring, trend analysis, outbreak management and map-based imaging needed during consequence management. For instance, Compressus' technology enables real-time access to such key facts as syndromatic data and pathogen identification.
"We are extremely honored to be joining the LEADERS Consortium which unites technology innovators to deliver the best bioterrorism and disease tracking and mitigation system available," said John Falk, President of Compressus. "The need for real-time access to key emergency data in the field remains at a critical high. This is a great system that allows immediate analysis of medical data to help decision makers to re-route ambulances, control resources in emergencies and even predict potential disease outbreaks."

The Lightweight Epidemiology Advanced Detection & Emergency Response System (LEADERS) Consortium is comprised of leading technology companies including EYT, formerly Ernst & Young Technologies (Chantilly, VA); ScenPro (Richardson, TX); Oracle (Redwood Shores, CA); Idaho Technologies (Salt Lake City, UT); and Compressus (Washington, DC). The LEADERS Consortium was founded in 1993 with support from the United States Air Force Surgeon General's office (USAF SG), Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA), and the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) in response to the need for a uniform system to effectively detect, track and respond to biological warfare, significant disease outbreaks and natural or man-made disasters.
