Compressus Executive Returns to Dept. of Defense to Lead Medical Science and Technology Programs

Military and Health Technology Expert Join Company's Advisors
Washington, DC - One of the nation's leading authorities on electronic medical records, medical imaging and computer tracking of health conditions and trends is taking his private-sector expertise back to the U.S. Department of Defense.

For the last two years, Klaus Schafer, M.D., a retired U.S. Air Force brigadier general, has served as Executive Vice President of Compressus, Inc., a leading provider of software for medical imaging and bio-surveillance.

Before joining Compressus, Schaefer was assistant surgeon general of the U.S. Air Force, where he earned wide recognition for his leadership in the fields of electronic medical records, telemedicine, medical information technology, diagnostic biotechnology, and health surveillance.

Earlier this month, Schafer joined the Office of the Secretary of Defense, where he will serve as Acting Deputy Assistant Secretary of Defense (Threat Reduction).

"We hate to lose Klaus' unique knowledge, experience and leadership, but we recognize the Defense Department needs his talents," said Compressus President John M. Falk. "We thank him for helping us advance the state of medical information technology in an era of heightened risks and capabilities."

For Compressus, Schafer helped develop and implement cutting-edge software including VIGILENT™, which provides homeland security and health decision makers with the ability to rapidly detect and manage unusual outbreaks of disease; and MEDxConnect™, which enables diagnosticians to send and receive massive medical data files securely and efficiently over low-bandwidth Internet connections.

Separately, Compressus announced the appointment of other prominent advisors:

  • Retired U.S. Air Force Gen. Joseph W. Ralston, former commander of the U.S. European Command and Supreme Allied Commander Europe, NATO, who among his many distinctions is noted for his leadership on science and technology issues

  • Joseph M. Allbaugh, former director of the Federal Emergency Management Agency from 2001 to 2003 and former chief of staff to then-Gov. George W. Bush of Texas

  • Kevin Hall, M.D., former Chief, Modernization and Healthcare Informatics, Langley AFB, and a highly regarded expert in using information technology to improve healthcare. He is currently Principal at CapitalMed
